It’s Virtual National Field Day!

Today is Friday, May 8th, 2020 and it’s Virtual National Field Day! Who would have ever thought we’d see the day? What a cool and innovative way to keep our school communities connected during this challenging time right now. My children attend the schools in the Suffern Central School District. The elementary schools within the district, decided to participate in this national event. They even emailed parents, the demo videos of different events to do outdoors or indoors. You can find the demo videos at https://openphysed.org/fielddayvideos. The different events aren’t the typical ones that would be at your usual field day. Instead, they were unique in that, the children used sock balls, laundry baskets, plastic cups, ladders, clothes, bowls, spatulas and even Tupperware lids! Yes, you read right, spatulas and Tupperware lids! My son, Jimmy’s favorite event was the “Clothes Relay.” This is when your child had to run from one side of the yard (or living room) to the other, and put on over-sized pieces of clothing (shirt, shorts, hat or sweatshirt- possibly a piece of clothing that belonged to mom or dad) and you run back and forth until you put each piece of clothing on. This event was timed. There were also score cards and whoever participated, had to email their score card to their gym teacher. My son had a blast participating today. Mother’s day is only in two days, so as a mom, it was rewarding and fun watching him participate. We look forward to field day every year. But, I’m so grateful that our school community improvised by giving families the opportunity to join in on the virtual fun. This is a moment, as a family, that we will never forget. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful Moms!!
